<image:title>Digital Scanner - How the iTero works The iTero Intraoral Digital Scanner is radiation free and enables us to take a precise 3D digital scan of the your teeth and bite, make adjustments in real time, and transmit the file wirelessly for processing. Standard protocol is to create a study model at the start & finish of your orthodontic treatment. The iTero software collects the images and seamlessly pieces them together. Using the images, a digital map of your entire oral anatomy is created, including the teeth, gums, tongue, and surrounding soft tissues. Your personalized digital map is used to plan your custom orthodontic treatment plan ranging from braces to Invisalign.</image:title>

<image:caption>Based on your individual treatment plan, a series of custom-made, clear aligners is then created specifically for you. These aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that won’t irritate your cheeks and gums like traditional metal braces often do. Simply wear them throughout the day, and remove them when you eat or to brush and floss your teeth. As you wear each set of aligners, your teeth gently and gradually begin to shift into place. <image:title>Retainers - Retainers Overview</image:title>
<image:caption>Your retainers are custom designed to maintain the stability of your new smile. After the teeth have moved, and the surrounding bone has stabilized, the gum tissue surrounding each tooth takes an additional 4-6 months to remodel and stabilize around the new position of our teeth. If the retainers aren’t worn consistently during this important window of time right after the braces are removed, the teeth will never be able to gain full stability, and are more likely to move back. <image:title>Retainers - How often do I have to wear my retainers?</image:title>
<image:caption>Typically we ask that you wear your retainers full time for the first 6 months, and then at nights thereafter - for life. If you ever feel that your retainers are feeling a bit tighter, then go back to full-time wear until they become passive again. If your retainers aren’t in your mouth, ensure that they are in their proper case – not wrapped in a napkin, as this often results in lost retainers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Retainers - Hawley vs. Clear Retainers</image:title>
<image:caption>We offer both Hawley and Clear Retainers, and one set of retainers is included in your orthodontic treatment plan. We have gradually started to use more clear retainers as we have noticed the superior retention they offer with less relapse of the teeth during those crucial first 6-12 months after the braces are removed. Dr. Ko or Dr. Yoon will recommend the retainer option which is best suited to your treatment needs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Retainers - Retainer Instructions</image:title>
<image:caption>Please wear your retainers as instructed by Dr. Ko & Dr. Yoon. Generally full-time for the first 6 months, then nights thereafter. Do not play with the retainer with your tongue- this will also cause distortion & prevent the retainer from seating correctly over time. Retainers can warp in excessive heat: Please do not soak your retainers in hot water or keep them in a warm car or next to a hot oven/stove. Keep your retainers away from your pets, they love to chew on them! Cleaning your retainers regularly is important to keep plaque and bacteria from building up (and becoming smelly!). To clean your retainers simply rinse them under water and brush them gently with a toothbrush & a non-abrasive toothpaste as needed. You can also purchase retainer cleaners from drugstores or from your orthodontist as needed. Remember that retention is just as important as braces in keeping your smile beautiful and straight.</image:caption>

<image:title>TMJ Therapy - TMD</image:title>
<image:caption>TemporoMandibular Joint disorder (TMD) symptoms range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain in the face, head, neck, and teeth, which may also include ear aches and spasms of the facial muscles. When teeth don’t line up properly in the upper or lower jaws it’s called malocclusion. A malocclusion may contribute to stress resulting in muscle and jaw pain. TMD however is often multi-factorial and exacerbated by increased stress. Left untreated (chronic TMD) parts of the jaw joint will start to collapse and degrade, producing more inflammatory—sharper and more focused—pain.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e51f6f0ec1e4d2bc3ea95fa/1582509097433-007GPWEQ77INN31FIMQM/TMJocclusion.png</image:loc>
<image:title>TMJ Therapy - What causes a malocclusion?</image:title>
<image:caption>A malocclusion occurs when your upper and lower teeth do not fit together in an ideally. When this occurs, tooth positions can shift, sometimes creating an asymmetry of the jaws. This may result in prematurely worn teeth, stress on your jaw hinges, and muscle tension. A good bite meshes your teeth together like the gears in machinery. But a bad bite can have many negative ramifications including severe headaches and muscle spasms. Initial symptoms may include popping and clicking in your jaw joints when you open your mouth to eat or yawn. Signs of possible TMD are chronic headaches, difficulty opening your mouth, difficulty chewing certain kinds of food, or a ringing/popping sound in one or both ears.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e51f6f0ec1e4d2bc3ea95fa/1582509400563-5O0MPKLRE1RIL6D8JY2L/night-guard.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>TMJ Therapy - TMD Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>During your consultation Dr. Ko or Dr. Yoon will complete a clinical exam and review of your symptoms and records. Depending on your case, a splint may initially be recommended to help alleviate your TMD symptoms. A splint worn consistently helps to open your bite, diminish clenching/grinding habits (parafunction), which alleviates excess pressure on the jaw joints, thus reducing acute symptoms. Once TMD symptoms have improved with splint therapy, the doctor may recommend orthodontics (along with splint wear) to help correct your bite – providing you with a long-term solution and relief from your TMJ symptoms.</image:caption>

<image:title>TADs - TAD Overview</image:title>
<image:caption>Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs) are miniature anchor devices made of a surgical grade titanium allow (approx 1.5 mm in diameter and 6-8 mm long) used in select orthodontic cases, to serve as a form of absolute anchorage allowing the orthodontist to efficiently correct your bite without the use of headgear, excessive elastics, or other extra appliances. Placement of the TAD is generally a quick and simple procedure – an anesthetic is used to numb the tissue and the TAD is placed through the gum tissue and into the jawbone. You’ll usually only experience slight pressure during the placement. TAD removal is quick and comfortable and usually takes just a few minutes without any anesthesia.</image:caption>

<image:title>TADs - Uses for TADs</image:title>
<image:caption>Several permanent teeth are missing Excessive dental asymmetry exists Close extraction spaces and avoid implant placement Upright tipped or impacted teeth Close open bites otherwise requiring jaw surgery Correct underbites by retracting the lower teeth back</image:caption>

<image:title>TADs - TADs Post-Operative Patient Information</image:title>
<image:caption>Managing Discomfort Initial discomfort may be experienced after TAD-placement,but will go away in 1-2 days To manage this initial discomfort Tylenol is recommended immediately after the procedure, and only as needed afterwards . If pain is severe and continues days after placement, please contact our office as soon as possible. Excellent Oral Hygiene is Key! The primary reason for TAD failure is poor oral hygiene which causes inflammation and loosening of the TAD. Maintain excellent oral hygiene as usual. We’ll give you a special anti-microbial rinse to use twice a day for 10 days. After 10 days you can do the rinse as needed for any inflammation around the area of your TAD. Use a cotton swab soaked in hydrogen peroxide to gently clean around your TAD after brushing twice a day. Be gentle with your TADs Avoid touching the TAD with your finger or tongue. Do not eat anything hard, sticky or chewy- taking care to especially avoid the area around the TAD. Emergencies If the TAD or any orthodontic attachments on the TAD come loose please contact the office immediately. Please contact info@tri-ortho.com for assistance outside of normal office hours.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Orthodontics - An Orthodontist has 2-3 years of additional education - just in Orthodontics.</image:title>
<image:caption>After graduating from four years of dental school (upon completing four years of college) and receiving their Doctorate in Dental Surgery degree (DDS) – Orthodontists go on to complete 2-3 more years of education – just in orthodontics – at an accredited orthodontic residency program. Only after this formal education can one be called an orthodontist. <image:title>About Orthodontics - An Orthodontist is a specialist who’s practice is devoted solely to Orthodontics.</image:title>
<image:caption>Like medical specialists who study their specialty areas after their general medical education, orthodontists devote additional years of study to orthodontics after they graduate from dental school. And like their medical counterparts-orthodontists limit their practices solely to their specialty area. Orthodontists have in-depth experience in orthodontic care to deliver an individualized & comprehensive treatment plan to best meet your needs. Orthodontists also devote time for continued training & education – specifically orthodontics – along with dental care and advancements in technology – to ensure that we are able to deliver the best possible treatment options & results for our patients. There are a lot of treatment options available, from clear aligners to modern braces. An orthodontist has the specialized in-depth knowledge to identify and plan for all the variables in your mouth to provide you with your best treatment options and customize your treatment plan accordingly. Orthodontists keep abreast of the full range of orthodontic appliances, along when each one is best utilized – to provide the best possible results.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Orthodontics - An Orthodontist understands that both function & aesthetics – creates a beautiful & sustainable result.</image:title>
<image:caption>An orthodontist sees the aesthetic problems, along with the functional problems of an incorrect bite in all three dimensions. Our teeth are function together with the upper and lower jaws, gums and facial muscles. The goal is not only to straighten the teeth, but to make sure that all factors are taken into account, for optimal function & longevity. Orthodontists are trained to diagnose and treat the root problem of your malocclusion – to deliver a healthy, beautiful smile and a lasting result.</image:caption>

<image:title>Elastics - Your Elastics</image:title>
<image:caption>You may be asked to wear elastics about during the course of your orthodontic treatment. The elastics help us move your teeth into the correct position. It’s very important that your elastics be worn all the time to be effective! Similar to pushing a car up a hill - if you take a break in the middle of the hill the car just rolls back down the hill and ends up at the bottom again – our teeth work in a similar way. Wearing them only 50% (only during sleep) will not be effective. Consistency is key!</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e51f6f0ec1e4d2bc3ea95fa/1582617485748-O9YXWY3L9DCVHHJ1RBOW/elastics1.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Elastics - Elastic Wear Guidelines</image:title>
<image:caption>Wear your elastics 24 hours a day & especially during sleep- unless instructed differently. You can take them off when you eat & brush your teeth. When you take your elastics off to eat or brush, put fresh ones on immediately after eating or brushing. You’ll feel some sensitivity the first few days. But with increased wear, the sensitivity will subside. However, if you aren’t consistent with your elastics the pain will last for a longer period of time & your teeth won’t move as efficiently. Carry your elastics with you at all times. It helps to keep a pack at home & carry one with you in your bag. Change your elastics at least 2x/day. Elastics become worn out. When they lose their elasticity, they don’t provide the proper pressure on your teeth and jaws. It is very important to change them as directed, even when they are not broken. If you run out of your elastics, call the office or come in right away and we’ll give you more. We can also mail you an additional supply of elastics. If you forget to insert your elastics one day, don’t double up the next day — just follow your regular instructions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Emergencies - Home Care</image:title>
<image:caption>In most cases areas of discomfort can be taken care of at home with simple adjustments & home care steps. Irritated gums and sore spots can be relieved by rinsing with warm salt-water (dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water) a few times a day. Please use the soft wax in your hygiene kit to reduce the discomfort from your new braces to your cheeks and tongue - make sure you soften a pea-size ball of wax between your fingers and dry the area prior to application of the wax. Please read & download home emergency care instructions:</image:caption>

<image:caption>Loose Band or Bracket: If the band or bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place – place wax on the bracket and we’ll repair the broken bracket at your next visit. If the bracket is unattached to the wire, remove it gently and bring it with you to your next visit. Sliding or Loose Wire: Gently slide the wire back into place and into the molar tube with your fingers or clean tweezers / needle nose pliers. Use a generous piece of wax to ease discomfort. As a last resort, you can clip the sharp wire with a clean nail clipper behind the last tooth to which it is attached. Poking or Sticking wire: Try pushing the sticking wire down with the end of a pencil eraser and use a large piece of soft wax on the sharp parts to ease discomfort. Loose elastic tie or O-ring: The O-ring is the colored elastic tie around your bracket. It’s okay to wait for your next adjustment if one or two of the rings come off and the wire is stable. You can also use a piece of floss and gently secure the wire back into the braces. We’ll replace it at your next appt. Loose Appliance: If your appliance comes loose on both sides, carefully remove it and place it in your case so that it can be re-cemented on your next visit- the appliance may have come loose due to excess manipulation with your tongue/fingers or from a hard/sticky/chewy food or object. If your appliance comes loose on one side, please call the office immediately for an emergency visit so that it can be removed or re-cemented according to the doctor’s instructions. Appliance or Headgear no longer fits correctly: If your appliance has become distorted and no longer fits comfortably as before – please do not try to force it into place – call our office and schedule an emergency visit so Dr. Ko can adjust your appliance for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Oral Hygiene & Diet - Keep Your Smile Bright</image:title>
<image:caption>Give your teeth & braces and/or appliances the special care they deserve to keep your teeth & gums healthy & happy throughout your treatment. You’ll notice that it is harder to keep your teeth clean with braces. Food compacts in the brackets and between your teeth, and can only be removed by brushing and flossing. If plaque remains on the teeth for any length of time, it will leave a permanent white scar on the surface, possibly leading to tooth decay. Your braces are fragile and are can be damaged when you eat the wrong foods (see below). Remember that the more damage to your braces, the longer it will take to finish your treatment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Oral Hygiene & Diet - Oral Hygiene Instructions</image:title>
<image:caption>One of our favorite tips is to do warm salt water rinses (1 tsp salt/ 1 glass water) 3x per day for the first 5-6 days after you get your braces on. This will toughen up the inside of the lips and cheeks and decrease irritation. Use the wax in your kit as needed; To use, warm up a small pea size ball of wax between your fingertips, gently dry the area the wax will be applied, and gently press on to apply. For the first 24 hours, stay on an extra soft diet of soups, yogurt, shakes, mashed potatoes, etc. as the glue takes time to fully set. Do not bite on any solid or hard foods for the first day. Brush & Floss after each meal. Use a soft bristle toothbrush. Brush in small circular motions at a 45 degree angle towards your gums, and all surfaces of your teeth & braces. Brush around each bracket and along the gum line to prevent decalcification of teeth which causes permanent white spots/lines on teeth. It is just as important to floss each night. And use an inter-proximal toothbrush to get into the hard to reach areas. You can also try a Water-pik to help in cleaning around your new braces & wires, however remember that a Water-pik does not replace flossing. Remember to continue to see your general dentist for regular cleanings every 4-6 months.</image:caption>

<image:title>Oral Hygiene & Diet - Diet</image:title>
<image:caption>Avoid any hard or crunchy foods: whole nuts, ice, chips or taco shells, bread crusts, bagels, popcorn, corn on the cob, meat on the bone, and whole apples or carrots (please enjoy fruits & veggies after slicing them thinly). Avoid foods that are overly sweet, sticky, or hard (all candies, sugary gums, dried fruits). Foods that cannot easily be cleaned off of your braces may lead to permanent tooth discoloration, white lesions and/or tooth decay. Minimize Sugary Foods & No Soda. If sweets are enjoyed, please brush/floss right afterward. Remember: Sugar + Plaque = Acid –> Swollen Gums + White Spots + Decay Your braces are fragile and are usually damaged when you eat the wrong foods. The more damage to your braces, the longer it will take to finish your treatment. Also beware of nail biting and pen or pencil chewing habits – since these can damage or break your braces and wires, leading to increased treatment time.</image:caption>

<image:title>RPE Expander - Overview</image:title>
<image:caption>This fixed appliance is used in orthodontics to create more space in the jaws during growth, to accommodate teeth. It works by separating the two bones of the upper jaws which are connected at the roof of the mouth by a suture. The best time to use this appliance is when you are still growing before the upper jaw bones become connected permanently. The appliance must remain in your mouth for about 2-4 weeks during expansion, and for about 4 months afterwards to stabilize and reduce relapse.</image:caption>

<image:title>RPE Expander - RPE Instructions</image:title>
<image:caption>Turn the jack-screw: 1 turn, everyday for 4 weeks and then STOP to keep the RPE passive - unless instructed otherwise by Dr. Ko or Dr. Yoon. Always use the wrench provided with the rubber safety attachment around an adjacent finger. Always enter the screw hole from the front & turn towards the back of the mouth until you can clearly see the next hole of the screw mechanism. During active treatment (usually 2-3 weeks) we must see you every week to monitor your therapy. If you miss an appointment, discontinue turning the appliance on the day of your missed appointment and call us to schedule a new appt. asap. Take over the counter pain medication as needed for any discomfort. If excess pain or swelling occurs, don’t hesitate to call us. As usual, stay away from hard, sticky, sweet foods. It is essential to keep the RPE clean. A water-pik and frequent mouth swishing can be a great addition to regular brushing.</image:caption>

<image:title>RPE Expander - Common Concerns</image:title>
<image:caption>If you experience any of the below, Do Not Worry as these are common symptoms and will get better in a few days: Pressure or discomfort on the outside of the teeth and the roof of the mouth, use Tylenol or Advil judiciously. A space will open between your two front teeth. This may happen rather suddenly. Do not be alarmed, this is normal. Sometimes this space will gradually start to close on it’s own - this is also normal. Talking & swallowing may be difficult initially - this will improve. You may also notice increased salivation, this is normal and should decrease with time. For more tips on home care please click the link below</image:caption>

Sleep is the most active period of growth – so this is the best time to wear your headgear! It may take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to get used to wearing the headgear throughout the night. Consistency is key! Our teeth will begin to move the most after the 12-hour mark.</image:caption>

<image:title>Headgear - How to place & remove your headgear</image:title>
<image:caption>Inserting Your Headgear: Look in the back of your mouth at the big tubes on your upper molars-the Headgear goes into those big tubes located on the lowest part of the molar bands. Put one side in first, then press the inside bow slightly to get the other side in. Then push both sides in all the way back until you hit resistance. Removing Your Headgear Gently remove one side first, then the other side. When removing, never pull from the OUTSIDE bow. Take hold with two hands on the loops on the INNER BOW next to the molars. It is important to remove it gently so you do not loosen your bands! Please remove your headgear If you are playing sports or doing anything active.</image:caption>

<image:title>Headgear - Homecare Guidlines</image:title>
<image:caption>You’ll experience the most sensitivity during the first few days. Your teeth may be tender for the first few days of wearing your headgear. This tenderness will disappear as you adjust to the new pressures. It’s important that you wear the headgear as close to 14-16 hours in a row during those first 3 days, until you get used to it. If you’re experiencing excessive pressure or pain, which doesn’t subside after the first few days, please discontinue use of your headgear and contact the office or Dr. Yoon directly. If the headgear gets distorted bring it into the office for an adjustment, do not try to fix it yourself. Always be careful when removing your headgear. If the headgear is removed carelessly, the part that fits in your mouth and attaches to your teeth could injure your lips, cheeks, face and possibly your eyes. Never remove the headgear until the straps have been disconnected. Never lift the headgear over your face. Never wear the headgear when running or playing sports. Take your headgear with you to every appointment.</image:caption>

<image:title>CBCT Cone Bean Computed Tomography - OVERVIEW</image:title>
<image:caption>Dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a specialized x-ray machine which produces detailed three dimensional images of teeth, TMJ, airway, soft tissues, and bones in one single scan. Cone beam computed tomography is a variation of the traditional computed tomography (CT) used in medicine. The Dental CBCT system used in our practice captures all the needed anatomy in one single cone-shaped beam rotation - with 10 times less radiation exposure. CBCT has some similarities with conventional X-rays, and also with the standard CT scans you would get in a hospital setting. But it's a huge leap forward in technology and diagnostic precision. It offers us the ability to visualize intricate structures inside the mouth & jaws in three dimensions. This specialized imaging reduces the need for invasive procedures, shortens treatment time and offers the chance for a better outcome. Having this 3D detailed information on the position of teeth and jaws helps determine exactly how and where teeth should be moved - minimizing treatment duration & trauma and maximizing patient comfort and efficiency. Overall the precise 3D diagnostic visualization of teeth, bone, TMJ & airway - provided by the Dental CBCT - allows for much more precise and individualized orthodontic treatment planning and thus optimal results. ≈</image:caption>
